It was also an important military base during World War II.

When the United States entered World War II in 1941, Love Field became an important military base. The Army Air Corps took over the airport and used it as a training ground for fighter pilots. The base was also used to repair and store aircraft. During the war, more than 35,000 pilots were trained at Love Field. It was also the site of a secret project to develop a new type of aircraft called the P-38 Lightning. The project was top secret and the aircraft were kept in a hangar that was guarded around the clock. Despite its importance, Love Field was also the target of several German bombing raids. On May 12, 1942, a German bomber dropped a bomb on the hangar where the P-38s were being stored. The bomb killed four people and destroyed several aircraft. After the war, Love Field returned to being a civilian airport. It was expanded and modernized in the 1950s, and today it is one of the busiest airports in the country.
